Empowering Women Credit Union Managers

Did you know that since 2002, more than 239 women managers of overseas financial co-operatives have come to Canada each year for a unique training opportunity? The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF) created the Women’s Mentorship Program to empower participants so they can make a difference in their home countries. From intensive training in best practices, including governance, loan default, and communication, to a 10-day immersion at a local Canadian credit union and community, the participants begin as strangers and soon become sisters.

Gabriela and Heidi, who shared their experience with us

When the participants return home, CDF and Canadian credit unions provide ongoing support as the women share what they’ve learned and work to break down barriers. It’s a mutual learning experience for everyone involved!

On this episode we speak to several women about what the Women’s Mentorship Program means to them. Have a listen.

I love radio and pursue stories about people and communities working together to solve challenges creatively and often, with a lot of heart. It's the human side of the co-op model that intrigues me. That and any chance to travel, especially to smaller locales, where folks seem to know that co-operating just makes good sense!
