Cape Breton Food Hub Co-operative & Food First Newfoundland

For small, local farmers, gaining access to new markets can be the difference between mere subsistence and actually making a living growing food. And for consumers, having a safe, secure and local supply of fresh produce and other goods is vital, especially during this pandemic. Enter the Cape Breton Food Hub Co-operative connecting farmers and consumers through online shopping and a transportation network. The result: more jobs on farms to meet increased demand, more fresh food on local tables.

Now, Food First Newfoundland is starting a similar project in the Humber Valley region with advice and support from the Cape Breton team.

Collaborators Alicia Lake from Cape Breton and Annette George of Nfld,, discuss how communities can become more resilient through the creation of healthy, local food systems.

I love radio and pursue stories about people and communities working together to solve challenges creatively and often, with a lot of heart. It's the human side of the co-op model that intrigues me. That and any chance to travel, especially to smaller locales, where folks seem to know that co-operating just makes good sense!
