Co-operation Virtual Institutes Begin June 15

The Association of Co-operative Educators (ACE) and Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC) are partnering to offer Co-operation Virtual Institutes beginning June 15.

The overall theme for Phase 1 (June 15-24) is how co-ops can be leaders during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond in areas such as employment, health care, agriculture, financing, car-sharing and creating a just and inclusive society. Phase 2 runs from Sep. 2020 – May 2021.

PPE Co-op in Waterloo Region

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the use of personal protective equipment mandatory in many settings while the stress of having enough supply is constant.

To that end, a new Community PPE Co-op is working to ensure a safe, reliable and cost-effective supply in the Region of Waterloo, Ontario. According to Co-op spokesperson Amber French, there are many small agencies and organizations in the area who require PPE but have been shut out from ordering as PPE producers require large orders. The Co-op is assembling a list of local groups requiring PPE then leveraging the power of bulk buying to purchase then distribute the supplies. “This way we can continue to serve those most in need,” according to French.

From a single doctor’s office, to a mobile health unit, to larger agencies like universities and school boards, some 35 agencies are set to benefit at this time.

The collective has received $50,000 from the Region of Waterloo to assist with initial costs. What’s more, it has use of a machine that can sterilize up to 20,000 N95 masks each day thereby preserving community supply.

I love radio and pursue stories about people and communities working together to solve challenges creatively and often, with a lot of heart. It's the human side of the co-op model that intrigues me. That and any chance to travel, especially to smaller locales, where folks seem to know that co-operating just makes good sense!
