Gay Lea Foods Distributes 1,400 Baking Kits

For families taking on home baking, long-time co-operative Gay Lea Foods is delivering baking kits to spread some joy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 1,400 kits, one to represent each of the farmer members in Ontario and Manitoba, are being sent to families in the Greater Toronto area, with frontline grocery workers being prioritized.

Gay Lea is using a vintage delivery truck to distribute the kits, which contain butter, flour, sugar along with a recipe for shortbread cookies. In phase two of this campaign, Gay Lea will deliver butter and baking-themed puzzles.

“Baking can reduce anxiety and bring people together,” says Child and Family therapist Cindy Smolkin. Recipients of the kits are encouraged to take photos of their creations and post on Instagram using the hashtag #bakehappytogether.

I love radio and pursue stories about people and communities working together to solve challenges creatively and often, with a lot of heart. It's the human side of the co-op model that intrigues me. That and any chance to travel, especially to smaller locales, where folks seem to know that co-operating just makes good sense!
