Smart Cities Challenge.
The Government of Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge has awarded millions of dollars in funding to implement innovative technology to help communities better the lives of their residents.
The winning grant prizes included $5 million to Bridgewater, N.S., $10 million to Nunavut communities, another $10 million to Guelph, Ont., and $50 million to Montréal, Que.
One of the cities that did not win was Airdrie Alberta.
Mayor Peter Brown said .“Though we are disappointed in the outcome, we are extremely proud of the hard work the Airdrie Smart Cities Challenge team put into the proposal we submitted,”
He also said that . We will be looking at other funding options so that one day we will be Canada’s Healthiest Community.”
Westnedge re-elected.
Longtime Nelson and District Credit Union director at large Lorne Westnedge has been re-elected board chair. Fellow director at large Laureen Barker was re-elected first vice-chair while Nelson representative area director Michael Bancroft was elected second vice-chair.
The elections followed the credit union’s 68th annual general meeting at the end of last month, which included a discussion of the proposed merger of six credit unions in the Kootenay Boundary.
In a news release, the credit union said the past year’s high points included positive growth in assets, members’ deposits and members’ loans, while also distributing close to $93,000 to community organizations within the West Kootenay region, and completing Trusted Advisor training with its employees.
Seib honoured.
Taurean Seib’s leadership skills were honoured at the National Credit Union Awards recently held in Winnipeg. Coastal Community Credit Union’s Branch Manager for Port Alberni was one of five winners of the National Credit Union Young Leaders Award. He also received the top $10,000 scholarship prize, which he can put toward tuition and travel costs to attend a leadership development program at a recognized university in Canada. “To be included amongst our system’s emerging leaders is truly humbling,” said Seib, “and to be selected as this year’s scholarship recipient is nothing short of an honour.” He’ll be putting the scholarship to good use by starting an MBA in Executive Management with a specialization in Leadership in the coming year. Coastal Community Credit Union has benefitted from Seib’s enthusiasm, creativity and commitment since he joined in 2006. Starting as a Member Service Representative at 19, he will soon take on the Regional Manager role for the Comox Valley.

BC Tree Fruits Co-operative.
BC Tree Fruits Co-operative (BCTFC) has announced the purchase of 85 acres of land in Kelowna, British Columbia (BC) with the purpose of building a new facility under the co-operative’s new ‘One Roof’ plan to consolidate the business and boost its capabilities.
The co-op also has an agreement in place to sell their property in Penticton, BC, some 62km (39 miles) from the new site. Both transactions will be completed by 31 May this year.
“It’s an exciting day for all of us,” said Todd McMyn, chief executive officer of the co-op. “This purchase signals our commitment to the industry, our growers, our staff and the Valley – and it will give us the ability to compete on a global scale moving forward.”
Jeet Dukhia, chair of the co-op, added: “I’m thrilled for the future of our co-operative following today’s news. On behalf of the rest of the board of directors, we are looking forward to working closely with the senior management as we design and build a world class facility that all of our grower members and staff can be proud of.”
BCTFC said its board of directors and senior executive will be working closely with all levels of government in the near future to lay the framework for the new facility located on Old Vernon Road in Kelowna.
