“Outside is for everyone. It’s time we acted like it!” That was the title of an apology letter from what was then Mountain Equipment Co-op after being called out for only portraying white people participating in outdoor activities.
Judith Kasiama, a refugee from The Democratic Republic of Congo, now living in Vancouver, was the one who took MEC to task. She also channeled her love of the outdoors and creating community into Colour The Trails, which subsidizes activities for BIPOC, LGBTQIA members and their allies to explore places they might not have always felt welcome.
Colour the Trails works with brand partners and organizations to produce diverse content, advocate, educate, break barriers and create accessibility to ensure outdoor spaces are inclusive. Kasiama says she is very proud to be part of a socially conscious community-oriented business led by Black women.
