Over the past 18 months, the Nova Scotia Co-operative Council (NSCC) has purchased 86 units of affordable housing, now owned by the community rather than someone interested only in the bottom line. Many of these properties were for sale by private owners, terrifying renters who knew they’d be evicted once a deal closed. But the Council stepped up as part of its commitment to making housing affordable and strengthening communities. The creation of additional affordable housing is planned.
With values rooted in The Antogonish Movement, the NSCC supports and promotes co-ops and credit unions with business development officers across the province.
It always puts people before profit with programs such as a Co-Pharm plan to lower the cost of prescription drugs, loans to small businesses, investments in social enterprises, help for youth entering the workplace and the promotion of renewable energy.
