About this episode

On September 25, 2022, Hurricane Fiona tore through Atlantic Canada leaving a path of destruction in its wake. It was the costliest and most intense post-tropical cyclone to hit Canada on record. Parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador faced torrential rains and winds of up to 160 km/hour. Powerful tidal waves and storm surges swept many homes and businesses out to sea.

Such was the case in Port aux Basques on the southwest tip of Newfoundland.  The photos above show some of the devastation to this community of just over 4,000 residents. Newfoundlanders know storms are part of living by the sea. But many people said they had never experienced anything like Hurricane Fiona.

Supporting the recovery is Atlantic Edge Credit Union, with branches in Port aux Basques and other towns in the western part of the province. CEO Cory Munden shares what it was like when the storm hit and how folks are working together to move forward. Donations to the relief fund are most welcome. Details below.
