Calgary Co-op To Expand Compostable Bag Program

The Calgary Co-op marked Earth Day this year by introducing a compostable bag program and charging a 5 cent fee for plastic bags. Since then, the Co-op says it’s seen a 73% reduction in plastic bag use over the same period last year. That’s why it’s going ahead and expanding this program to all its liquor and convenience store locations beginning August 19.

The compostable bag can be used in store and then again at home in kitchen compost pails and green bins. Now the co-op is turning its attention to reducing plastic packaging in its meat, produce and bakery departments.

Saskatoon Solar Co-op Seeks More City-Wide Projects

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society Solar Co-operative hopes to expand its partnership with the City of Saskatoon. The co-op and city already co-own a 30.6-killowat solar power generation site at the landfill gas generation station. The co-op also provides power to 5 electric vehicles with the Saskatoon Car Share Co-op. Now it wants to partner to install and own solar panels on city buildings and lease the project to the city for 25 years. The City of Saskatoon has set a target of producing 10% of city-wide energy through local, renewable resources.
